Paranormal Glossary

Its always helpful to have a glossary of paranormal terminology handy so those interested in the field can understand what things are. This is a brief Glossary of those terms and their meaning.

Anomaly: An event or condition removed from ordinarily understood experiences.

Apparition: The soul or spirit of a deceased person, capable of appearing in visible form or otherwise manifesting itself to the living.

Banishing: A Formal ceremonial procedure used to cast an unseen presence or influence out from an area. This term can refer either to a spiritual cleansing, or the closing of a magical rite, when the invoked powers are dismissed and released.

Cleansing: A less ritualized form of exorcism, where a dwelling or site is purified and malevolent influences are banished through prayers, spoken as the petitioner moves through the area.

Demon: A hostile dark entity, supposedly of non-human origin, which some believe to be fallen  angels.

Demonic Haunting: A haunting in which a hostile dark entity, supposedly of non-human origin, has taken possession of a person, building, or object.

Digital Recorder:  Is a generic term for a device used to capture an analog or digital source, and store the encoded data in a digital format.

Doppelganger: German for Double or Look Alike. A person's duplicate or identical counterpart, seen as a result of bi-locational or astral travel.

Ectoplasm: A substance or Spiritual Energy "exteriorized" by physical mediums.  Ectoplasm is said to be associated with the formation of ghosts/spirits, and asserted to be an enabling factor in psychokinesis.

EM or EMF: An Electromagnetic Field is a physical field produced by electrically charged objects. It affects the behavior of people, and other charged objects in the vicinity of the field. The electromagnetic field extends indefinitely throughout space and describes the electromagnetic interaction. It is one of the four fundamental forces of nature (the others are gravitation, the weak interaction, and the strong interaction).

Entity: A disembodied consciousness commonly referred to as a ghost, spirit, or malicious demon.

EVP: Electronic Voice Phenomena. Disembodied voices and/or sounds, not audible with the human ear, captured on audio recording devices. EVP's are classified as Class A, or Class B. A Class B EVP is faint and sometimes difficult to detect and hear. A Class A EVP is clear, and loud enough to easily determine what was said.

Exorcism: Ceremonial expulsion of invading spiritual/demonic entities from a person or dwelling. The Jewish and Catholic Christian faiths each have a formal 'Rite of Exorcism' to be conducted by the respective Rabbi or Priest.

Fear Cage: An area at a location that is surrounded by equipment or machinery that emit high amounts of Electromagnetic Fields (EM or EMF) that surround and affect anyone who enters that area.

FLIR: Forward Looking InfraRed is an imaging technology that senses infrared radiation, processes that data, and produces a viewable image.

Ghost: The soul of a deceased person, a disembodied spirit, usually as a vague, shadowy, or evanescent form, as wandering among or haunting living persons.

Haunting: To inhabit, visit, or appear to in the form of a ghost or other supernatural or paranormal  being. Hauntings can be categorized into four distinct types, Intelligent, Poltergeist, Residual, and Demonic.

Hex: An evil spell, or a curse.

Infestation: A harassing or troublesome invasion by ghosts or spirits.

Influence: The power of an invisible entity of undetermined nature, affecting the inhabitants of a dwelling or area. This may initially present as an inexplicable feeling of uneasiness, then be followed by more defined signs which reveal a haunting.

Intelligent Haunting: (also known as a classic or traditional haunting) differs from a residual haunting, being a haunting in which a spiritual entity is aware of the living world, and interacts with or responds to it.

IR or Infrared: Infrared is used in night vision equipment when there is insufficient visible light to see. Night Vision devices operate through a process involving the conversion of ambient light photons into electrons which are then amplified by a chemical and electrical process, and then converted back into visible light. Infrared light sources can be used to augment the available ambient light for conversion by night vision devices, increasing in-the-dark visibility without actually using a visible light source.

Lore: Accumulated facts, traditions, or beliefs about a particular subject.

Matrixing: The natural tendency for the human mind to interpret sensory input, what is perceived visually, audibly, or by touch, as something familiar to the person, or that is more easily understood and accepted.

Oracle: A person or agency considered to be a source of wise counsel or prophetic opinion.

Paranormal: The realm of occurrence's, and phenomena beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation.

Phantom Lights: Unknown lights or energy balls that appear in an area where they are not expected, and from an unknown source. Sometimes they can be attributed to electrical discharges. In most instances, the phenomenon of floating lights cannot be dismissed by ordinary explanations.

Poltergiest: German for Noisy Ghost. This is a fairly rare occurrence wherein random objects are moved and sounds are produced by an alleged unseen entity, the sole purpose of which seems to be to draw attention to itself. In reality this is a phenomena where the psychokinetic abilities of a living person is absorbing and utilizing energy to move objects.

Possession: The state of being dominated by evil spirits in a way that entirely subverts the personality of the human host.

Psychic: A person sensitive to influences or forces of a nonphysical or supernatural nature.

Residual Haunting: Paranormal imprint of a scene which is repeatedly played out, where the witness of such phenomenon essentially is peering into the past. The ghostly participants of these phenomena often seem unaware of their living observers.

Vortex: A portal through which spirits enter the physical world from the spiritual realm to appear as either orbs or apparitions.

Wraith: The image of a person appearing shortly before or after his or her death; can also be applied to their ghost.

Zombie:  A body disinterred shortly after burial and reanimated through the use of Voodoo, its sole purpose thereafter being servitude as a mindless slave.
